Multiple Instances, Best Practice (SQL 2014)

Hello all: We are in the process of upgrading/migrating several separate 2008 SQL servers to a new single SQL 2014 server.

It was decided to turn each old separate server into a separate instance on the new single big server (5 old servers converted to 5 instances on one new server.)  The new single server will also be clustered with AOAG (something we didn't have before.)

However, we are evaluating the design; a few ideas:

- Should each instance get its own separate data and log drives? Temp drive too?

- Should each instance get its own set slice of memory and cpu allocation via configuration/settings?

- Given unlimited resources (and support), would giving each instance its own server and cluster be ideal or best practice? That is, as opposed to having multiple instances on one server?

We have the more or less obvious concerns about the possibility of one instance taking down the rest of them. We're hoping AOAG will reduce that possibility.

Thank you for your time.

Sean Don
