SQL server management studio 12 install just wants to reinstall sql server

I am trying to set up SQL server on a desktop machine WIN7 to use as a test server for a database application. The application provider said to download and install SQL server express 12 and management studio. I downloaded both and installed SQL server, then ran the install program for management studio and it started over with the server install. I clicked on upgrade rather than standalone, but there being no more features to install it would not run and nothing to do but cancel. The files I ran were:

SQLEXPR_x64_ENU

SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU

What am I doing wrong?

How to add a new instance to a 2 node SQL 2008 R2 Cluster under the same networkname

$

Hello All,

I'm fairly new to sql and have just deployed a new 2 node SQL 2008 R2 cluster.

During installation, I created a networkname SQLCLU and a named instance I01.

I now would like to add another Instance (I02) under the same networkname.

What is the proper procedure to do this?

I don't believe that I should do this using the action: "New SQL Server failover cluster" from the setup menu, but rather using the action "New Installation or add features to an existing installation"

With the second option, I'm however not sure how I should make this instance clustered..

Should I also execute the "New Installation or add features to an existing installation" action on the 2nd node in the cluster?

Many thanks for your  advice!

Filip

SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio install fails telling me to install Visual Studio 2008 SP1!

Hi,

I am getting the following error when trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio (SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe or SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe) on a new Toshiba Portege R830-10R:

Another version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has been detected on this system that must be updated to SP1.  Please update all Visual Studio 2008 installations to SP1 level, by visiting Microsoft Update.

I have all Windows Updates installed on this machine and I DO NOT have VS 2008 installed on this computer (VS2008 was never installed on this computer), but VS 2010 SP1 with .Net Framework 4.0 SP1!

I have sent all day trying to install either ones of the above .exe, but always get the same error message.

I have checked the registry and see that I do not have a  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS key but only a HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC key (probably since I configured VS1010 for C#).  The HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC\Servicing\9.0 contains SP = 1 and SPIndex = 1.

Please help.
Thanks.

Eric

How to check if SQL Shared Management Objects is already installed ?

$

Hi,

Our product requires SQL Shared Management Objects to be installed on customer's machine to work.

So, in our WiX setup for our product msi, we need :

1) Check is SSMO is already installed.

Question: Is there a reliable way to determine if SSMO is already installed. I am hoping there would be a registry key that I could search up. Is this key in different locations for x86/x64/WoW SSMO installations?

2) If SSMO is already installed, how can I determine its version ? (again hoping the version information can be queried from registry).

3) As part of our setup in WiX, can I pull in the installation of SSMO redist. Would love to see some similar sample using WiX.

Thanks,

Sameer

to redist SSMO or tell the customer to install SSMO first.

WiX setup of our product needs SQL Shared Management Objects to be installed.

Cannot install SQL 2005 on a machine with SQL 2012 instance(s)

$

I am attempting to install a named instance of SQL 2005 dev edition.

The target machine already has several named instances of SQL 2012.

Setup of SQL 2005 failed with the error "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found".

This error apparently occurs because a newer version exists from the 2012 install. However, uninstalling native client and attempting to install SQL 2005 again then fails with a similar error, but this time for the VSS writer.

This page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143694.aspx indicates that it should be possible to install SQL 2005 on a machine that already has SQL 2012 installed, but what I am seeing is that I will need to uninstall rather a lot of components of the 2012 install (probably breaking those instances) before installing SQL 2005.

Is there a workaround for this that does not involve breaking all existing 2012 instances?

SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Evaluation Edition expired, how to downgrade to Standard Edition

$

Hi folks,

we installed by mistake an Enterprise Evaluation copy of SQL Server 2008 R2 in a production site (Standard Edition was the one to be installed). In this site we have a mirrored database with two servers holding the database and a witness server. Now the evaluation period has expired and we lost access though SQL Server Management Studio in the three servers.

As we have the product keys, we performed a downgrade in the witness server from Enterprise Evaluation to Standard (using the SQL Server 2008 R2 std disk) and it worked, so that we regained access to the production databases from the witness server.

The question is: SQL Services are still running in the two servers where the database is installed but, will they stop because of the evaluation period expiration? If answer is yes, what is the time we have left to complete the downgrade in the two remaingin servers?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

Im trying to install a new Sql Server which will be added to an availability groups. Its meant to be standalone ( ie not part of FCI).

I have enabled cluster services and added the server to the existing cluster but when I try and install I get this validation error on the install screen.

The directory d:\xxxxxxxxx\xxxxx  is not a valid path.  Standalone sql server on wfc cluster cannot have files on shared disk locations

Any ideas where i have gone wrong here?

Server is windows server R2. Sql Server version 2012

How much memory does SQL Server 2008R2 Standard use on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit?

Hi,

can anyone tell me how much RAM will really be used by SQL Server?

72 GB are currently installed. As Windows is only able to use 32 GB is SQL Server able to use the other 40GB + the unused part of the first 32 GB?

Thank you very much!

Hi,

This strange behavior started recently. If I close SSMS, it restarts itself as if it crashed and trying to restore itself. Even if I hit cancel as it's restarting, it will restart itself yet again. This happens twice. Any idea what's causing this?

Thanks, Sam

Cannot uninstall sql server 2012 on Windows 7

Can't Unistall SQL Server 2012

This is the error a co-worker gets when trying to uninstall SQL Server 2012. She is running Windows 7 ProfessionalService Pack 1, 64 bit OS. She had SQL 2008 installed and then installed 2012 Enterprise as well, because she needed it for a project. The problem is we don't have a license for local instances of Enterprise, so we need to install it. However, 2012 Setup is telling us we don't have the minimum requirements to *install* 2012. Which leads to some interesting questions:

1) Why does the 2012 installer allow you to install but not uninstall when you don't meet system requirements?

2) How does that make any sense?

3) Does she really need to install more software to be able to uninstall? Since SP1 is already installed, what would that be?

Thanks!

Joe

SQL 2012 Upgrade Advisor

$

I was attempting to run the SQL 2012 upgrade advisor against a SQL 2005 SP2 database (I know not SP4) and it fails to connect. I get the following error message:

Error message:

Unable to connect to server. Reason: The client was unable to establish a connection because of an error during connection initialization process before login. Possible causes include the following:  the client tried to connect to an unsupported version of SQL Server; the server was too busy to accept new connections; or there was a resource limitation (insufficient memory or maximum allowed connections) on the server. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)

Does the SQL 2005 instance have to be running SP4 to use the SQL 2012 upgrade advisor?

Thanks,

Laura
