SQL Server 2012 - Database Engine Services Failed

Hi all,

I can't install the SQL Server 2012 Express version with tools downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/editions/2012-editions/express.aspx

I'm getting the following error:

Error installing SQL Server Database Engine Services Instance Features
Could not find the Database Engine startup handle.
Error code: 0x851A0019

I'm trying to install a new stand-alone version with a default instance but always getting this error. From the features I'm installing the database engine services (not the replication), all the tools, only the basic management toolds and the SQL Client connectivity SDK.

Further in the installation I'm choosing the Windows authentication and in the list of SQL administrators I've already tried to install as current user but also as System. Both with the same error result.

The Summary File can be found here: http://d.pr/f/didH

Note: Visual studio is not installed.

Thanks in advance

Good morning,

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server that I would like to upgrade to Windows 2012 R2. This server houses a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance and I am wondering if an in-place upgrade of the OS is supported for SQL 2008 R2. Please point me to any documentation that may discourage or prohibit this upgrade method or any docs that support this type of upgrade.

Thank you!

A full backup of a database is taking an abnormally long amount of time to complete

Hello --

We are running SQL Server 2008 R2 64-bit on a Windows 2012 R2 Standard 64-bit system. Our backup plan utilizes the MaintenanceSolutions.sql scripts. The Database Backup = USER_DATABASES - FULL job involves twenty databases of sizes ranging from twenty megabytes to over 300 gigabytes.

Two of the largest databases were recently reconfigured to utilize a separate FILESTREAM volume from the others due to space limitations of the original volume. Both were interactively backed up to a temporary folder on another volume. The databases were then deleted, and subsequently restored with the new FILESTREAM volume configured in their options. The databases were successfully accessed by our users after the reconfiguration of each had been complete.

The larger of the two databases, which is 360 gigabytes, completes backing up in about three hours. However the other database, which is 326 gigabytes, is taking a day and a half to complete. I compared the properties of the two databases, and I did not see anything different in their configurations.

The DatabaseIntegrityCheck -USER_DATABASES and IndexOptimize - USER_DATABASES job histories did not list any problems. The backups of all the other databases are not taking nearly as long to complete.

I am going to be interactively backing up the problematic database this evening to see if the issue is within the backup job, or the database itself. Beyond that, what other steps can I take to troubleshoot and correct this issue?

upgrade sql server 2008 R2 from evaluation version to licensed using command line

Hi,

Here is the situation:

I want to have a master hard disk of Windows Server and non licensed SQL Server 2008 R2 (evaluation version)

Now I want to mass duplicate the disk to other computer.

On each newly computer i need now to insert product key to upgrade the SQL Server from evaluation version to licensed.

The problem is that I need to get in to the setup program of the SQL Server in each new computer.

I am looking for a command line tool to be used in RunOnce that will allow me to insert the product key and to upgrade the SQL server from evaluation version to licenced version.

Any ideas?

Avi

Post installation of SSIS for existing MSSQL instance with different build versions

I would like to install SSIS into existing MSSQL2014 Fail-over cluster instance with latest Cumulative update 7 which was applied. I know how to do it but I want to know if consistency of versions between SSIS (from installation disc) and MSSQL2014 (already updated) will be kept at the same latest server version (latest version is 12.0.2560). In to detail, I mean I have latest CU7 update applied but I want to install SSIS from image where is first RTM version release 12.0.2000 but currently I have 12.0.2560 CU7 Server version which is newer. Will be there conflict of versions or SSIS has no impact which version of SQL server is actually installed? I can also download image of SQL2014 with SP1, but build version is higher than actual CU7 (SP1 is 12.0.4100 build version and CU7 with fixes 12.0.2560 buld version). Reason why I don't want to install SP1 even when build version is higher has less fixed bugs than actual CU7.

So in result does post-installation of SSIS downgrade SQL Server version to which installation media contains or it will be self-upgraded to actual server installed version?

Thank you for help.

Hope someone can help as i'm at the tearing my hair out stage. I had the evaluation copy of sql server 2014...It expired so i bought the developer version from microsoft online store..Downloaded and installed ok...When I went to use it however through start menu and sql management studio my problems began. I get the popup telling me that the expiry period is up and directs me to buy a license key. I then try to use the upgrade wizard to use my product key and it says invalid key. I uninstall the shared components...still same message. I uninstall evaluation instance - same message. I have now one instance but still can't access the management studio and am getting the same message (invalid key). I guess I need to change something in the registry but what?

hope someone can help

Error when running DTCTester Tool to test the distributed transactions

Hi,

I tried to test the distributed transactions between the application server and the SQL database server, using the Microsoft DTCTester Tool (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293799).
On both application and database servers, we have: Windows Server 2008R2 64-bit, and SQL Server 2012 64-bit Standard Edition.
I am getting the following error when running the DTCTester tool on the application server:

Failover timeout problem

$

I'm looking for a bit of help with regard to a problem I'm looking at when failing a SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise instance over from one node of an active/active cluster to the other node.

One of the instances, normally on node #2, is at RTM. And when failing over to node #1 there is a time-out bringing the SQL Server service on-line, however once the time-out has, er, 'timed out', the service can actually be brought on-line OK manually. And looking at the Log there are errors of the form ‘Login failed ..... Reason: Server is in script upgrade mode…..’. This is similar to some other posts I've read regarding problems bringing SQL Server back on-line after a service pack however is slightly different in that the service is able to be brought on-line OK, albeit manually. Furthermore, when failing back to its original (and preferred) node, the service come back on-line OK so the problem only affects failing over from node #2 to node #1.

At first I thought this was the result of a failed attempt at installing SP1 however I'm now not so sure. SP1 has definitely been installed on the other instance on both nodes and this is able to be failed over between nodes without a problem. This instance's preferred node is node #1 so.

It's difficult to tell which script is causing the problem here. It does look like SP1 was started and cancelled several times before completing however I'm finding it difficulty to interpret the log files with regard to what might be happening to the problem instance and I can't see any out-and-out failure message anywhere relating the the problem instance. I've also applied trace flag -T902 and, whilst it inhibits script from running, it doesn't prevent the fail-over time-out, although naturally there could be something else happening here. Curiously though, if I just re-start the service rather than failing it over to a different node, those 'Script upgrade mode' errors don't appear. These would only seem to appear when failing over.

I'm happy to try re-installing SP1 however I rather understand the problem and the error messages first before I do that.

Regards,

Gordon.

Installing SQL Server CU's

$

Hi,

I've a question on applying cumulative updates to SQL Server, specifically CU7 to fix an issue affecting us.  I've done this in our development and qa instances (all servers have 2-3 instances) and everything is fine so I'm ready to push this out to production.

Our production server is an active/passive cluster so I'm not sure how this will change the process.  I've not had to apply a CU in production before so I don't fully understand the process.  Also, the production server has two instances which are both on the active node.

I've read about taking the passive node out of the cluster group, patching that server, rebooting, failing over and repeating.  What I wasn't sure about was if this applied to CU's as well as Service Packs?  Also, if I'm patching the passive node, won't it ask me for an instance to patch too?

As a final point and something I have suggested is a no go is the request to apply to CU to only one instance (the non-critical one) first and do the second instance on the weekend.  The idea being a bit of a test run on a clustered instance (nobody seems to have done it here previously).  I want to do them together when we are sure of the process.

Thanks

SQL Brower with multiple versions of SQL Server

I've installed SQL 2014 on a server that is already running SQL 2008 R2.  When I did so, setup did not install a SQL Browser service.  I presume that was because there was already a SQL Browser service on the computer.  I my presumption correct?  If so, can I do something about it.

This all came about because I have an application that cannot find my SQL 2014 instance by name, but can if I specify the port number.  It seems to me that the 2008 R2 browser is handling my 2008 R2 instance, but now the 2014 instance.

Upgrading SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine to SQL Server 2014 Express Edition - Very Slow Install

$

I have a software product that is written in VB.Net and uses SQL Server as the data source. I need to deply SQL Server with the application on initial install. Here's the issue the old SQL server 2000 was quick and upgrading to 2014 has added 14 minutes onto the install time. Enough to put a client off the product because thats way too long to wait for something to install!

I'm using NSIS to manage the installation but this is simply passing command line parameters to the setup to ensure that no use feedback is required and that additional components, required for the application also get installed.

I'm performing some installation tests on a VMWare machine, of fairly low specification I'll admit, its Windows 7 with just 1GB ram, 40GB HDD. I'm finding that the installation speed of the 2 versions of SQL Server are on a completely different scale with SQL Server 2014 taking nearly 15 minutes to complete whereas  SQL Server 2000 takes just 1 minute 20 seconds!

As we need to distribute SQL Server desktop engine with our product this means we're stuck with a terrible end user experience when they attempt to check out the software trail or we use SQL server 2000 which does not really indicate that we maintain our software.

I've read on some forums that this can be related to a locking issue where the installer is waiting for certain resources to be released. But I have not seen any such issues in the logs. Does this installer really take this long? Is there anyway of speeding up the install?
