Update failed for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB2528583)

I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit.  I am running Windows 7, 64 bit.  I already have SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit installed on my system.

1) First I tried via Windows Update.  I'm already caught up on all other required and all other desired optional updates.  When I try to run this update, it fails with this message:

Code 84BC051B Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

When I click "Get help with this error" and "Open the Windows Update Troubleshooter", and progress through the troubleshooter, then it claims to fix something ("Repair Windows Update components - Fixed" and tells me to retry the update, and when I simply click to Try Again,  it says "Windows is up to date - There are no updates available for your computer".

But then if I click to find updates online, it still finds the update for SQL Server R2 SP1 among the available optional updates.

2) Second, I tried downloading an executable to install.  When I run the executable, I get this error:

"SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x64-ENU.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

Any idea what is going on?

Thanks!

SSMS restarts itself after I close it

Hi,

This strange behavior started recently. If I close SSMS, it restarts itself as if it crashed and trying to restore itself. Even if I hit cancel as it's restarting, it will restart itself yet again. This happens twice. Any idea what's causing this?

Thanks, Sam

SQL server installation from command line and configuration file

I would like to try use command line and configutionfile to install SQL server.
I read I should put the commandline fine in the root of installation file.

We have a shared folder that has all the installation file on the network, I don't have write permission on that folder. I don't want to copy those installation files to my local too, then what other options can I do?

I tried to add in the command line to change the directory to the installation files location at start, but since it is a shared directory, I got an error: CMD does not support UNC paths as current directories.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Migrating from SQL Server 2008 R2 Express to SQL Server 2012 Express

Hi,

Because of reporting features missing in SQL Server 2008 R2 which resulted in reporting issues while trying to make reports from within VS2010, which others have also confirmed on several forums, it seems I have no choice but to upgrade to 2012.

My first objective was to first uninstall SQL Server 2008 R2 and then install SQL Server 2012.  But couldn't go far as I didn't succeed uninstalling SS2008 R2.  The setup program made all its checks, confirmed that everything was ok then, after a few minutes, stopped with a "insufficient memory" error.  I even tried by just uninstalling the "Reporting Service" part but got again that same error message.  So I had no choice but to recover my whole disk.  Thanks to myself I made a backup!

BTW, the actual version of SS208 is SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition with Advanced Services SP2 CU1.  SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 is also installed on my disk.  For building my applications, I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Professionnal Edition SP1.  My machine actually have 1,75GB of 3.00GB total physical memory used, 1.75 of 6,2 GB total virtual memory used.  Finally, my hard disk has 60 GB free.  Unless I'm wrong, I just can't see where is the problem.

Now, getting back to SQL Server 2012 webpage, I could read that it was possible to upgrade from 2008 R2 to 2012.  Could this be my exit door?

I would really appreciate if someone could help.  What action should I take?

Thanks in advance for helping,

Stéphane

Hi All,

I would like to ask for your help since I'm new to SSAS.

I have created a cube for SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition and found out that Proactive Caching is not supported.

I need to update the data every 30 minutes.

Please advise on how to implement Proactive Caching feature using other means.

Thanks,

Hi I have two questions :

1) Can we decide which core of which CPU to allocate in a particular VM during Virtualisation

2) Is it possible to run SQL Server 2008 Web Edition on a 12 VCPU Virtual Machine. Does Web Edition have any restrictions on the number of cores a CPU can have . I know it has an upper limit restriction that it supports only 4 CPU's but anything on the number of cores these CPUs can have ??

SQL 2008 R2 SP1 - now can't access databases

$

I have two SQL 2008 R2 instances installed - one is Developer edition and the other Express. Yesterday I installed SQL 2008 R2 SP1 and now I can't access any of the databases under either instance. DBCC CHECKDB spat out a huge list of errors on one database under the Developer Instance and, under the Express instance I get the message:

Database 'MyDb' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space.

whenever I try to execute a simple SELECT on a table. Under Express I also tried to open up the databases in Management Studio's object explorer. It failed. When I looked at the error log, it had a message for each database along the lines:

Cannot use file MyDb.mdf because it was originally formatted with sector size 512 and is now on a volume with sector size 3072.

The database files have not been moved.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Manual removal of SQL Express 2008 - usual uninstall routine does not work

Hi, folks

I have been using Arcserve V12 on a Windows 2008 storage server. Arcserve used SQL Express 2005.

Last week I upgraded Arcserve to V16 and during the installation it tried to upgrade SQL 2005 Express to SQL 2008 Express but it failed.

I have been working with Arcserve Support to fix this but we have been going round in circles. Using the domain administrator account initially failed because it did not have the neccessary permissions, but we fixed this. I have also tried uninstalling using the server's local administrator account but we get the same results:

We got to a state were using the Uninstall/Change option from within Programs and Features would successfully report that SQL Server Express has been successfully removed: 'Your SQL Server 2008 removal completed successfully'. However, all the entries are still present in the Programs list:

Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Browser
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Native Client
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files
Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer

And, all the folders are still present off Program Files:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server>dir
Volume in drive C is OS
 Volume Serial Number is 1252-E50F

Directory of c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server

15/03/2013  14:49    <DIR>          .
15/03/2013  14:49    <DIR>          ..
09/03/2013  08:17    <DIR>          100
09/03/2013  08:18    <DIR>          80
09/03/2013  12:17    <DIR>          90
04/05/2010  13:37    <DIR>          MSSQL.1
09/03/2013  08:18    <DIR>          MSSQL10.ARCSERVE_DB

The services window shows the following:

Attempting to start a service results in an error message stating the file cannot be found.

I have now uninstalled Arcserve and would like to completely remove SQL Server Express 2008 and start again. Can someone assist me with this please?

I am a complete noob when it comes to SQL Server and have never needed to install or uninstall it on it's own before. If you need further information please ask.

Thanks!

Mark

Restore OLAP Cube created in SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2008 R2

Hi All,

I have created a cube using SSDT in SQL Server 2012.

Now for deployment, I was told that the client cannot provide SQL Server 2012 and will just use SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition instead.

I have tried restoring the backup file (.abf) and I got "Instance versions used are incompatible".

Is there any way or tool that can downgrade cube? Just like for db, I can use SSMS and generate script and specify the SQL Server version.

Unable to add feature to existing SQL Server 2008 R2 Install

Hi,

I'm trying to add reporting services to an existing 2008 R2 instance as a pre-requisite for a fresh CRM 2011 installation. I figured out that the "Installation Type" page that allows adding features to an existing instance does not show up. This is an SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise installation and the Data-base Engine is up and running and being used by SharePoint. The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 with all updates installed.

Tried to run setup "as administrator", but didn't help. Tried Add/Remove from control panel, but no difference. Seems that the setup routine does not recognize the instance initially. Is there any command line switch that forces the Installation Type page to appear?

I'd be thankful for any hints.
